Harold Mezo Cartoons
(Comments and descriptions are from Harold)
The A div team in mid 1975 while we were the yard(portsmouth). Hakala was always napping some place and I usualy had him
napping in the strips...
When qualifing for the beloved "tunas" or "2 carp sucking on a trashcan" you would get some strange questions from the
guys you were trying to get your signatures from. My strange question was during my next to final quals before seeing the
captain. It was about the 4 little posts in the bow compartment as soon as you enter the hatch, down on the starbord side.
answer: level platform for bubble when boat was built
This was an actual story. Mr. yount was the supply officer and going through
training for dive officer. He asked that question to chief Metzler (i was off duty planesman)
I thought the guys on the planes were going to pee themselves.
Anybody who stood planes watch knew that rock and pop at periscope depth was a bear. The seas didn't co-operate,
the bubble would jump up and down and the screw would occasionaly come out of the water
Our engineer officer actually used vice grip pliers to disassemble a valve after telling us to use the proper tools.
He got ragged after the cartoon showed up.
Thanks Harold!
